25 years of 'Thriller'

Don't call it a comeback — he's been here for years.

Michael Jackson released "Thriller 25" on Tuesday, a little more than 25 years after the groundbreaking release of "Thriller," the wildly successful album that helped solidify him as the King of Pop.

Extras

Not surprisingly, "Thriller 25" contains the entire original album. It also features fresh collaborations with artists such as Fergie and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and Kanye West.

While the new version of "Billy Jean" (featuring West) is an interesting take on the song, and will.i.am brings new life to "The Girl Is Mine," it reminds us of how great the original album really was. Even if it's in vogue to dismiss the album and artist now, it doesn't change how we secretly have always felt about "Thriller."

Here are five lists yielding a grand total of 25 reasons why the album — the best-selling album ever — and the King of Pop are still relevant today.

5 reasons 'Thriller' is still one of the best albums ever

1. It's "uncool," which means it's now "cool." Don't ask us why, it's just the way the universe works.

2. You can't dance to "The Joshua Tree" by U2 ... although you can still drunkenly croon "With or Without You" on dollar draft night.

3. More than 100 million served. That's how many people around the world have listened to "Billy Jean" and tried to light up the living-room carpet.

4. Quincy Jones produced it. Everything the guy touches turns to gold. It's a burden, unless you're a record producer.

5. Seven Top 10 songs. There have been greatest-hits compilations without that much substance.

5 strange cultural

impacts of 'Thriller' found on YouTube

1. Prisoners in the Philippines doing the "Thriller" dance. Apparently, in the Philippines, prison is a lot like a Michael Jackson video shoot.

2. Wedding receptions. Go ahead and learn the "Thriller" dance. You will need to know it for every cool/ironic wedding reception for the next 15 years.

3. Thrill the World. More than 1,600 people did Thriller at the same time on Oct. 27, 2007, in many cities around the world, thanks to an online-coordinated effort. They're already planning for 2008 on www.thrilltheworld.com.

4. "Indian Thriller." The "Indian Thriller" is what you actually look like when you try to do the "Thriller" dance.

5. SoBe Super Bowl ad. Naomi Campbell starred in one of the more popular Super Bowl ads this year. Her backup dancers were animated salamanders.

The 5 biggest mistakes Michael Jackson made post-'Thriller'

1. "We Are the World." It's almost as if the most popular artists of the era (and, inexplicably, Dan Aykroyd) came together and brainstormed something embarrassing that they could regret on their deathbeds.

2. Neverland Ranch. No explanation necessary.

3. The "People v. Jackson." Hey, do you remember that one Michael Jackson court case? Apparently he (Insert tawdry joke here)!

4. Plastic surgery. We're pretty sure he's had some.

5. "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker." MJ runs around in this video game saving kids from closets and car trunks. When he defeats level "bosses," the dead bad guys become backup dancers. Bubbles the chimpanzee turns MJ into a laser-blasting robot. This is not a joke. This is a real game. Seriously.

5 reasons 'Thriller'

will still be around another 25 years

1. It's Michael Jackson. In 25 years he'll have had enough plastic surgery that he'll be around forever.

2. "Thriller 50." The debut of "Thriller 50" in the year 2033 will feature supporting artists such as Jaden Smith (son of Will Smith), Sean Spears (son of Britney Spears) and Keith Richards (guitarist of The Rolling Stones).

3. Classic pop. The phrase "classic pop" will remind people of the good ol' days, when music was "good" and "really meant something, man."

4. 20th century music class. Required course study for music history majors who will be forced to analyze and compare early and late Michael Jackson works.

5. The Moonwalk. We will all still try

to dance in our living room like Michael Jackson in "Billy Jean." We will never be able to do it.

5 reasons why we loved 'Thriller' in 1983 and still love it in 2008

1. The Moonwalk.

2. The Red Leather Jacket.

3. Sleepy graveyards and monster attacks.

4. It won eight Grammys, so it must be good.

5. "Thriller" was the greatest video ever. Still is, if you ask us, which you inadvertently did by reading this far.
