Sinbad to perform at the Funny Bone

Actor-comedian Sinbad, who is performing at the Funny Bone Comedy Club through Sunday, March 9, takes a few moments to discuss reality TV, funk music and more.

Comedic diversity

Extras

"There is no traditional path. You've got prop comics, you've got ventriloquists and you've got guys who are great at one-liners. Bill Cosby was probably the greatest storyteller ever. Richard Pryor didn't tell set-up jokes. He told life stories. Richard would take his time with a 15- or 20-minute story, man, and just slay you."

Reality TV bites

"I think everybody wants to be a star so bad that they'll do anything. Reality shows are made to embarrass you. What kind of person wants to do that? I don't really believe if you think you have talent you'd do a show to embarrass yourself. If you look at any great entertainer or athlete, they don't do something to embarrass themselves. I'm about to dust you, I ain't going out there for you to embarrass me."

No faking the funk

"Why does funk appeal to me? Why do I breathe air? Without funk and soul, this country wouldn't be what it is. Funk and soul is the essence of everything that courses through our veins. That music was a time of revolution. During the '60s and '70s, it wasn't just about music, man, it was about speaking for us. It was talking about our lives."

Misconceptions debunked

"I don't think anybody knows what I'm about. People who saw me early, when I was barnstorming through doing my stand-up, they got a chance to see where I come from and my point of view. I think some people have white-washed it into: 'Sinbad is a family man, Sinbad is family comic.' Dude, I went through some changes in my life. My life was not easy. I made my mistakes and they all made me what I am and that's what my comedy's about."
