Popular one-man show in town for one night
Monday, March 10, 2008
On a whim in 1995, Patrick Combs deposited a $95,093.55 junk mail check marked "non-negotiable" using an ATM machine near his home in San Francisco.
To his disbelief and amazement, the check cleared. Suddenly, he had more than $100,000 in his account.
Extras
He's still collecting dividends on both the bank's mistake and its attempts to rectify the mistake without admitting it.
He turned the experience into a one-man show that's already been an off-Broadway hit and a featured attraction at both HBO's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival and the 2005 Spoleto Festival.
"Man 1, Bank 0," now on tour, will be presented at the Victoria Theatre on Wednesday, March 12, for one night only.
Ninety minutes without intermission, the Universal 1 Variety Series presentation traces Combs' David vs. Goliath struggle with the bank — telephone calls, threats, affirmation from other average Joes and coverage by national and international media. It turned out that what he did was completely legal.
He shows copies of the actual documents in a slide presentation.
The show was directed by Robert Dubac, who has been through Dayton with his own one-man show, "The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron" (Loft Theatre, 1990).
Combs is a former TV personality for the Paramount shows "Real TV" and "Hard Copy," where he starred in hidden-camera segments.
