Concert lineup announced for Riverblast, parks

DAYTON — Five Rivers MetroParks has scheduled three free summer concerts at Island MetroPark and lined up the entertainment for the annual Riverblast summer kickoff celebration and fireworks show at Riverscape.

The one-a-month series at the band shell of Island MetroPark, 101 E. Helena St., will include:

• June 14: "An Evening of Bluegrass," featuring the family harmonies of The Whites, Kentucky songwriter Larry Cordle with his band Lonesome Standard Time, and southwest Ohio's own Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers.

The Whites, who include dad Buck and daughters Cheryl, Sharon and Rosie, have been members of the Grand Ole Opry for 25 years and had on-screen roles in the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

• July 19: Jaci Velasquez and Band. The contemporary Christian performer has won six Dove Awards, been nominated for three Grammies and two Latin Grammy Awards. WFCJ-FM 93.7 will broadcast its Kaleidoscope show an hour before the concert.

• Aug. 16: Dayton-based funk and soul artists The Zapp Band, gospel and R&B singer Shirley Murdock and opening act Lamar and Yolanda Drake.

Time is 6 to 9 p.m. for all three Saturday concerts. Admission is free and no tickets are needed. Food vendors will be on site, but pets and coolers should be left home. Bring a blanket or lawn chair for seating. Call (937) 274-0126 for more information.

• May 24: The all-day Riverblast at Riverscape, 111 E. Monument Ave., on Saturday, May 24 will feature Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners The Funk Brothers at 8:30 p.m., a fireworks show at 10 p.m. and the Purina Incredible Dog Team at 3, 4:30, 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Hourly attractions starting at 2 p.m. will include: Grupo Caribe, The Amazing Portable Circus' Danger Juggling Show, History of Rock 'n' Roll Part I, Ventriloquist and juggler Mike Hemmelgarn and History of Rock 'n' Roll Part 2.

Mainstage acts preceding the Funk Brothers will be: the Music Slam 2008 Teen Band Playoff, 2 to 5 p.m.; Bonneville, 5:30-6:30, and the Eric Jerardi Band, 7 to 8 p.m.

There will also be strolling entertainers. Admission is free, but food and beverages will be sold. Call (937) 274-0126 for more details.
