A 19-year-old Miami University student was released from Miami Valley Hospital on Wednesday, May 14, five days after a fight at the Signa Nu fraternity under investigation by Oxford police and the university.

Steven A. Ward, of Springboro, was charged with underage intoxication after Oxford police were called to the fraternity house at 300 Talawanda Rd. at 2:28 a.m., May 9, according to a police report.

"Mr. Ward smelled strongly of alcohol and witnesses stated that he had been drinking just prior to falling and striking his head on the stairs," according to the report.

"He gave the officer, EMS people some grief," said said Sgt. Jim Squance, public information officer for the Oxford police.

Ward was taken from McCullough Hyde Hospital in Oxford to Miami Hospital for treatment of a head injury. He was released Tuesday, a hospital spokesman said.

Further investigation indicated Ward was actually injured in a fight with a fraternity brother, Squance said.

On Tuesday, Squance declined to identify the fraternity brother because he is an uncharged suspect. Squance said no one else had been charged in the case.

University officials said the incident was under investigation by director of student affairs, but that no action had been taken.
