Running backs? Hey, the Packers have a few

Times were Brett Favre handed off to Ahman Green. But the past couple seasons, Green was hurt before leaving for Houston.

The Packers' running back spot has been a fluid situation ever since. And Jim Taylor isn't coming back.

Extras

Najeh Davenport, Samkon Gado, Noah Herron and Vernand Morency all have lined up in the backfield. Entering the season, it seemed Morency and rookie Brandon Jackson were competing for the job.

Two weeks in, a new name surfaces: rookie Deshawn Wynn, who had 50 yards and two TDs against the Giants.

Relax. Wynn has 11 carries in his career and did his damage against the Giants, not the '85 Bears. Even so, running backs are in short supply and Wynn may (or may have been) available in your league.

Take a shot on Wynn, because who is the other free agent running back available in your league —New Orleans' Mike Karney? Hey, in deep leagues, anyone who has found the end zone more than Notre Dame is worth a look.

With that, here's the under-the-radar Week 3 selections.

Quarterback

• In the top five in most leagues, Carolina's Jake Delhomme should be an obvious starter now. But go back to your draft. Was he among the top 15 QBs taken? The Panthers are a mess and someone has the radar lock going with Steve Smith.

• This one is hard to type. Chicago's Rex Grossman may be a good play against the Cowboys. Yes, he has three picks and one TD and may not be the best quarterback on his own team. But he's the starter and the Cowboys gave up 312 yards and four TDs to Eli Manning and 287 yards and two TDs to Trent Green. C'mon, Good Rex!

Running back

• By now, Fred Taylor is on your bench and Maurice Jones-Drew is on your, uh, list. But there's a little evidence that one or both will improve this week at Denver. The Broncos allowed 99 total yards and a touchdown to Buffalo's Marshawn Lynch and 159 yards and a TD to Oakland's LaMont Jordan. Neither Taylor nor Jones-Drew has played well, but give the edge to J-D.

• I was high on Thomas Jones (even drafted him). Maybe I was just high. But the Jets could get the ground game going against the Dolphins, who have given up 178 yards rushing per game. Make sure Jones is healthy enough (at least questionable, hopefully probable) before starting him.

Receiver/tight end

• Kansas City's Dwayne Bowe has a big game and an even bigger ego, especially for someone who caught two passes for 22 yards last week. But one of those was for a score. The Chiefs (probably without Eddie Kennison) face the Vikings, who don't let you run but will let you pass (264 yards per game).

• Washington's Santana Moss was a Jason Campbell overthrow away from a 150-yard, one-TD day against the Eagles. Against the Giants, Moss will have plenty of room to maneuver since Antwaan Randle El's primary job is to run off the safeties. The G-Men have given up 621 passing yards in two games.

Week 2 hits and misses

• At quarterback, the non-obvious picks were Brett Favre and Alex Smith. Favre had 286 yards and three touchdowns against the Giants and suddenly looks like he's back to being a full-time starter in a deep league. Smith (cited as a risky play) completed 11 passes and lost a fumble. Did I mention how Favre played?

• At running back, the non-obvious selections were the healthy and starting Bucs and Falcons running back(s). Atlanta's Warrick Dunn had just 54 total yards but did score a TD. Jerious Norwood had 43 yards total and watched Dunn score a TD.

Carnell Williams shook off injury for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Pittman was to be played only if Williams didn't.

• At receiver/tight end, the non-obvious recommendations were any and all Lions and Ravens. Besides Roy Williams (120 yards and a TD), rookie Calvin Johnson had 68 total yards and a score. Plus, Shaun McDonald had 71 yards and Mike Furrey had 60 yards.

The Ravens' Derrick Mason had 54 yards while Demetrius Williams had 13, both of which, uh, aren't good. BUT, tight end Todd Heap had 76 yards and a score.
