Fantasy Football: Chiefs' unknown running back a good play

By Mark Gokavi

Thursday, November 22, 2007

Quick! Go update your fantasy football lineup. It's Thanksgiving, meaning Thursday games are kicking off soon.

Better not wait until after you eat, because that TripTik — or whatever's in turkey — means a journey to Napville.

Extras

Before a snooze, here's the Week 12 non-obvious picks:

Quarterback: Matt Schaub, Jeff Garcia, David Garrard. With Andre Johnson back, Schaub can pile up some yards for Houston. Plus, no one's really scared of the Texans' running backs.

Garcia plays Washington and Garrard gets the Bills — still shell-shocked from the Randy Moss Experience.

Running back: Kolby Smith, Steven Jackson, Maurice Morris. With Priest Holmes' retirement and Larry Johnson's shaky status, the rookie Smith could be a good play against the Raiders.

Jackson is finally healthy and running strong. In the same game, Morris gets to face the Rams' defense.

Receiver: Jerricho Cotchery, Hines Ward, Steve Smith. OK, Cotchery is the only non-obvious name. Laveranues Coles won't play, so the Cotch should deliver.

Ward's production hasn't matched his name due to injury. That should change this week since Santonio Holmes likely won't play.

If OK (and don't play him unless you hear he's a go), Smith is a top-5 receiver. But he and the Carolina QBs have been hurt.

But who better to get healthy against than the New Orleans Saints?

Week 11 recap

Quarterback: Kurt Warner, Philip Rivers, Vince Young. Warner had 211 yards and two scores (thank you, Bengals) while Rivers had 309 and a touchdown. Young racked up 305 yards, a TD pass and a 74-yard TD run.

Running back: Brandon Jacobs, Ryan Grant, Chester Taylor. Jacobs had 103 combined yards and a touchdown while Grant had 90 total yards. Taylor? Well, he had 202 combined yards and a turkey (3 TDs). That performance was more than predicted, but you'll take that gravy for today's mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Wide receiver: Antwaan Randle El, Andre Davis, Joe Jurevicius. Randle El had seven catches, but for just 53 yards. Davis had just two for 30 while Jurevicius had four for a respectable 82 yards.

Sure, those aren't great numbers, but after the QBs' and Taylor's feast of points, it's a bit like complaining about canned cranberries instead of fresh ones after dinner.
