Go for the football, stay for the beer
Get Super Bowl excited even if you're not a sports fan
Friday, February 01, 2008
Not everybody out there is a big football fan, but that doesn't mean Super Bowl Sunday can't be a fun experience. There are plenty of ways to make a day about sports a fun one, even if you're not that into the game.
First things first, football is way more interesting to watch if you know what's going on. So educate yourself on the game.
Extras
This doesn't mean you need to memorize both teams' playbooks, just get down the basic facts. For example, know the scoring system. A touchdown is six points and can be seven if they get the extra point kick, or eight if they throw it in for a two-point conversion. A field goal is worth three points.
Second, get to know the teams. This year it's the New York Giants versus the New England Patriots. The Giants record this season is 13-6 and the Patriots are 18-0.
Watching the game will be a lot more entertaining if you know a couple key players on each team. The Giants have Eli Manning (#10) at quarterback, Jacobs (#27) leading in rushing, and Burress (#17) leading in receiving. The Patriots have Tom Brady (#12) as QB, Maroney (#39) leading in rushing, and Welker (#83) in receiving.
Next up, get some fun sports gear for the game. The NFL has a great line for both men and women; you can shop online at www.nfl.com. They also have fun football ringtones you can download to get yourself in the Super Bowl spirit.
Lastly if all else fails and you just can't get into the game, then simply enjoy the time with your friends. Dig into that amazing Tostitos dip and grab yourself a cold one. If you're super bored, arrange a half time drinking game, or for those who aren't drinking maybe a touch football game outback. For the non-football-fan, Super Bowl parties are still worth going to, even if it's only for the food and drinks.
